Chapter 16

Questions bounced around in Matt’s head. Would they allow Kelton to land? And why was he coming here? How did he know to come here?

Matt wished he, Logan, and Grace hadn’t agreed they wouldn’t carry on telepathic conversations in the presence of the others. Sure, it was the polite thing to do, but, dammit, he wanted answers. The private kind. But there was no choice now.

He glanced across at his friend. “Not a social call.”

Logan shook his head. “No. And he had a message for you. He apologizes for breaking a confidence and accessing your computer records.”

Matt wasn’t the least bit surprised by the breach of trust. It had been expected. And Kelton being at the top of the food chain meant that everything Matt did went through him anyway.

Logan then addressed James and Julia. “He’s requesting permission to land, and an opportunity to explain Matt’s findings. He swears he has no connections with the Minnows.”

“Do you believe him?” asked Julia.

“I don’t disbelieve him.”

She nodded. “Your opinion, James?”

“The man has rubbed me the wrong way more often than not, but I think we should hear him out.” His dog stuffed its nose into his hand, and he absently rubbed the animal’s head. “The question is, where do we have the meet, and who attends?”

Angie tapped the table. “We could do it at the hangar, not let him get any closer to the kids than that.”

“But,” said Quinn, “if some of us go to the airstrip, then we’re leaving less protection here at the house.”

“Is he alone?” asked Matt.

Logan nodded. “Just him and Galen, his pilot.

“I’d trust Galen with my life, and my kid’s.” said Angie. “He’s solid. How about leaving security with the plane and bringing both Kelton and Galen in here?”

“No.” All eyes swung to Matt. “He’s too proficient at mining information. If it was up to me, the meet would be outdoors, and in a reasonably neutral spot, like at the end of the runway. My gut says don’t let him close.” His mentor. A man he’d trusted for the past twelve years. Aside from Logan, the closest thing he had to a friend.

James was studying him. “We’ll go with that, then. Do you want to be part of the meet?”

“I think I have to be.” Like it or not. “I also think Grace and Logan need to be there to make sure we keep his power and abilities under control.”

“Agreed. That’s three, Quinn and I make five. Anyone else think they should be a part of this?”

Cass was frowning. “Having my children threatened by the Minnows, the same idiots who tried to kill me a few years ago, I’m torn. I want a chance to look Kelton in the eye and find out if he’s connected to them, but I want to stay in the house and protect my babies.”

Angie reached out and touched her hand. “Since the kids should be together for the duration of his visit, I’ll step into whichever role you say. I’ll either go meet him and stare him down for you, or stay with the kids.
